Redesigned JobShine’s current web offering to one that is mobile responsive, optimised and more intuitive for its users to use and navigate.
About the Project: Through General Assembly, our team of 4 UX designers was fortunate to be linked up with our client, Job Shine, for an opportunity to redesign their web offerings over a duration of 3 weeks.
My Role: UX Designer who contributed to the entire process of the project; UX Research and Strategy, Wireframing & Prototyping, Testing and Project Management
Tools: Figma, Miro, Google Meet, Google Drive
*This is a pro-bono project
Background
Founded in 2019, Job Shine is a HR tech solution company that focuses on the blue-collar job market and is in the midst of expanding its digital offerings with more features and functionalities*.
However, our client has expressed concerns that their current site is not as intuitive and optimized as they would like it to be. Releasing new features and functionalities would only make it more difficult for users to navigate around their site.
As such, our team was tasked to redesign Job Shine’s current web offerings for both desktop and mobile and propose design recommendations before the release of these new features and functionalities.
*I’m unable to elaborate on these offerings at the request of our client
What We Discovered through our Research
Independent Research and Task Analysis
Through conducting independent research on Job Shine and task analysis on Job Shine’s current site, we found the following issues:
Job Shine’s branding is inconsistent
Job Shine’s website lacks clear organizational structure of content and information
User Interview
Taking reference from Job Shine’s listings, we interviewed 10 individuals of varying ages, who are currently working or have previously worked in blue-collar jobs.
Afterwhich, using the Affinity Mapping technique to synthesize our user interview findings, we found the following insights:
Job seekers have expressed their desire for more accurate job matches so that they do not waste their time and effort applying for jobs that they’re not suitable for
Job seekers want to be able to browse and apply for jobs easily on the go because they value convenience
Ideation
After our discoveries had been shared with our client, a design critique session was conducted to help the team gain alignment.
Everyone in the team was tasked to focus on an aspect of the site and spent 30 minutes sketching out our ideas. Afterwhich, the team came together to provide feedback on one another’s sketches and consolidated all ideas.
Final Design and Recommendations
We proposed 4 design recommendations to the abovementioned issues identified to our client:
Skills Match Feature
Streamlining JobShine’s Pre-Interview Questions
Simplify Website Navigation
Adjusted Branding
1. Skills Match Feature
To improve the job matching process for job seekers, our team’s solution is to introduce the Skills Match Feature that provides job recommendations to job seekers based on their skills.
Step 1: Job seekers to update their skills in their profile for better job recommendations
Step 2: Afterwhich, they will be able to view a list of job listings sorted by the percentage of skills that matched the role.
2. Streamlined the Pre-Interview Questions (PIQ)
As part of JobShine’s job application process, users are required to fill up pre-interview questions created by employers to quickly identify whether the applicant meets the job requirement of the role.
Current Flow
In JobShine’s current PIQ experience, the user interface (UI) doesn’t provide much guidance to the user at each step of the application process by telling the user how many questions he/she has to fill up, which could range between 5 to 10 questions.
Additionally, by putting each question individually, the number of clicks required can hit up to 21 clicks.
Redesigned Flow
Our team worked to improve the PIQ process by streamlining the pre-interview questions into 2 screens, thus reducing the total number of steps users need to make when it came to answering the PIQ.
3. Simplify Website Navigation
To create a clearer organizational structure of content and information, we introduced the following:
Navigational Bar and Breadcrumbs
The navigational bar will help users make sense of the information better, whilst breadcrumbs around the site will enable users to know their current location clearly.
This results in users being able to better navigate around the site with ease, clarity and confidence.
UX Microcopy
We added meaningful microcopy throughout the site to help and guide users through the task that they’re required to take and achieve their goal, be it applying for a job, updating their profile or sign in/up.
This is especially useful for new users who are unfamiliar with the process and thus, the additional information will help them to onboard quicker.
4. Adjusted Branding
Before diving straight into the high-fidelity prototype, the first step our team took was to update Job Shine’s branding.
Although our client gave us the freedom to propose new colours, we knew that it was not wise to make drastic changes to their current brand colours which consisted of blue, red and yellow, as this might throw Job Shine’s current users off.
Instead, we played with the shades and switched up their primary colours from blue and red to yellow and blue, as they are a more accurate reflection of Job Shine’s brand, that is, when we think of Job “Shine” and “blue”-collar, yellow and blue would naturally be the first 2 colours that come to our mind.
